Paper Frequently Asked Questions

Paper is one of the most recovered, recycled items in the waste stream. It makes up the largest percentage of a household's overall waste and outlets for paper recycling are readily available. You can recycle cardboard, chipboard, newspaper, office papers, junk mail and packing paper...even your old phone books!

Can you recycle my shredded paper?

Yes, but we ask that you place it in a paper bag and staple it closed and mark the bag "shredded paper." If loose, shredded paper is put into the recycle bin then it creates a confetti-like problem for our environment. Cross-Shredded paper is not recyclable and should be repurposed or placed in your trash can.

Is wrapping paper recyclable?

Yes, but we cannot accept wrapping paper with foil or metallic surfaces.

Do I have to remove the cellophane "windows" from envelopes before recycling?

No, these come out easily in the recycling process.

Can I recycle paper plates, paper towels and tissues?

None of these items can be recycled. Paper plates have a plastic liner built in which keeps them from breaking when they have food on them. Plates without the plastic liner can't be recycled because of food residue. In the event that you have unlined, non-contaminated paper plates, place them inside your blue bin. Paper towels and tissues have short fibers that can't be recycled.
